Microsoft has been taking it on the chin in the mobile department for awhile now. Although the Surface tablet has been received fairly well, Windows Phone sales have been low. The company released some good news today in a report that claims a 10% increase in Lumia sales over the same quarter last year. That's decent news for Microsoft at a time when everyone knows they missed the mobile revolution and saw their dominance in technology seeded to Apple and Google.
Now here's the not so good news. Although Microsoft sold 8.4 million Lumias in the quarter, overall revenue was down. How is that possible? Most of the sales were of low end Lumia phones. Microsoft hasn't released a new flagship device in awhile so margins are very low.
Microsoft is expected to announce two new flagship phones this year. Let's hope their luck changes. So far, Microsoft has been playing catch up and they haven't done a good job. Windows Phone is fantastic, but Apple and Google have such a large lead Microsoft isn't attracting enough developers to their platform. Until that happens, customers will not have a reason to make the switch.
