Pocket Rangefinder is a tool for your Pocket PC that allows you to measure distances with your PDA. The way the program works is quite simple. Pocket Rangefinder gives you a picture who's size you can manipulate. You change the size of the picture to match the size of an object you see in the distance. When the size of the Pocket Rangefinder picture matches the size of the object in the distance, Pocket Rangefinder gives you the distance of the object.

Setup of the program is straight forward. You simply enter the distance (in inches) of the PDA from your eyes. You basically measure the distance of your hand from your face, while your arm is fully extended. You also enter the size of your Pocket PC screen. Once these measurements are entered, you're ready to go.

Pocket Rangefinder comes with several different pictures that you can use to measure distant objects. There is a man standing, a car, a plane, a deer, a door, and an arrow. You choose which picture you want to use to compare to the objects you are trying to measure the distance of.

Pocket Rangefinder's developer describes the program this way:

  • No additional hardware required. All you need is a Pocket PC.
  • Very accurate. Measure a person's distance at 100 feet to within 5 feet.
  • Image database allows you to measure a variety of common objects like people, cars, and airplanes. Easily customize it to add your own images.
  • Metric and US Customary units.

Who would use Pocket Rangerfinder? I guess just about anyone. I don't often find the need to measure the distances of objects but if you do, you can check this program out. It's simple to install and easy to use.
