Update: Dell Pocket PC Available Nov. 18

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - November 04, 2002

Over the past few weeks there has been a lot of confusion over exactly when Dell would be releasing their line of Pocket PCs. One set of rumors had the Dell Pocket PC shipping in 2003, while another set had the device shipping later this month. Fortunately for those who were waiting for the Dell offering the company has posted information to their website saying that they will have their first Pocket PC, the Axim X5, available November 18.

Dell had earlier promised to deliver two Pocket PC models. Both of these models were being released at entry-level pricing. The lower priced model would be sold for $199 and the higher priced model would have a price tag of a mere $299.

It is unclear which of these two models the Axim X5 is, but it is still nice to see that Dell will have a device in stores before the holiday buying season.

Update: According to our sources the Axim X5 will come in two separate flavors. The first will be a low end model with a price tag of $249. Dell will have a $50 rebate at launch which will bring the final cost of the device to $199. Fortunately for consumers the low price tag doesn't mean that Dell has skimped on performance. The lower-model Axim X5 will feature a 300 MHz XScale processor and 32 MB of RAM while the higher-priced model, which will retail for $349, will have a 400 MHz XScale processor and 64 MB of RAM.

Both of these devices will measure 5" x 3.2" x 0.7" and will weigh just under 7 oz. They will feature a 3.5" screen and offer expansion via CF type II and SD/MMC slots. An exciting piece of information about the Axim X5 is that it will feature a removable battery. A 1440 mAh will come with the device, but there will also be an optional 3400 mAh battery available that will offer incredible battery life.
