The Navman 3420 is an expansion sleeve for the iPAQs. Expansion sleeves seem to be one of those accessories that people either love or hate. I tend to dislike the expansion sleeve concept because it adds thickness to a device designed to have a nice form factor. My feelings on expansion sleeves changes when I see the innovative products that are being developed which take advantage of the expansion sleeve slot to add functionality to the iPAQ.
First Impressions
When I first opened the Navman box I was a bit disappointed by the size of the sleeve. It adds quite a bit of thickness to the iPAQ, and it also has a rather large antenna that sticks out of the top of the device. Initially, I thought the added size would be a bad thing, but I soon got over the size. Most users will use the Navman in their car with the included holster so the size really doesn't become too much of an issue - unless it prevents you from mounting the device nicely on your windshield.
Usage
Being impatient, I wanted to begin using the Navman immediately. I pride myself on being able to pick up nearly any gadget and being able to use it without reading through a manual. I knew that I would need to install some software and maps onto my device in order for the Navman to work. I inserted the appropriate CD into my PC and loaded the appropriate software and registered the product. Once that process was completed I proceeded to the map installation software. The software is fairly easy to navigate. You select the maps that you would like to use and they will be installed into the storage area that you choose. The Navman sleeve has a built-in CF slot which you can use to store maps. I chose to install the map for Hawaii onto my SD card.
