Microsoft is in the midst of a massive effort to gain the ground they gave up in the mobile computing space when the completely missed the smartphone craze. Windows Phone 8 has not been a hit, but the company is not sitting in the corner and sulking. They embarked on an effort to make Windows look and act the same on all platforms, and Windows Phone 10 is part of that effort. In a piece on PC World, Agam Shah says Windows 10 is already gaining momentum.
Acer, and Alcatel One Touch have already announced plans to support Windows Phone 10 with devices. In addition to Microsoft's Lumia line, these other companies will broaden the WP base.
Although Microsoft is currently sitting at under 3% marketshare on smartphones, the interest in Windows Phone 10 will almost certainly bring an upward trend for WP. Bob O’Donnell, principal analyst at Technalysis Research, suggests Microsoft will see a 10% marketshare by 2020.

Until now handsets with Windows Phone OS have only come with Qualcomm chipsets. But by the end of the year, Windows 10 will also be on handsets with Intel’s Atom X3 chip, code-named Sofia, which was announced at the show. Intel’s chips are in just a few Android handsets, and support for Windows 10 is important as the chip maker takes on ARM, which dominates the smartphone market.
