Microsoft announced its new CEO pick, insider Satya Nadella the other day. The pick represents a huge change for Microsoft as Nadella is only the third CEO in Microsoft's history.
Microsoft also announced Bill Gates would step down as chairman, but take a more active role in the company. How will this new CEO change Microsoft? Will he be able to change Microsoft from a PC focused company to an Internet company, or will he follow the path Microsoft is already on?
Many people criticize Microsoft for not keeping up with technology because Apple and Google have passed them by in terms of revenue. Keep in mind however, Microsoft makes a lot of money, and continue to hit record revenue numbers when compared to their own historical numbers. When you compare them to Apple, that's when things fall apart.
The key question for me is whether Nadella can open the company up, and broaden its base. Will he make Office products for iOS and Android? Will Microsoft make Internet Explorer for other platforms and compete head to head with Google Chrome? Or, will they continue to create false hurdles to force people to stay in the Windows ecosystem?
Microsoft should abandon its policies of the past, and open the company up. Make Microsoft products for all platforms and make it easy for customers to use their products. The PC is no longer the central device for most users so forget trying to charge an arm and a leg for PC software. Surface tablets have not taken off, so make Microsoft software for the iPad and Android. Can't we have IE for iOS? It may sound strange now, but if Microsoft can make a lightweight powerful browser, why couldn't they compete with Google Chrome? Microsoft can compete, but will they?
