Microsoft's Surface Tablet is a dud. Face it. Compared to the rest of the tablet market Microsoft's Surface sales are weak, despite a large marketing budget. Last October there was a lot of hype surrounding the Surface's launch. We saw commercials with kids dancing and snapping the kick stand out, and a lot of people were excited about the keyboard cover. Now that the numbers are in though, it looks like Microsoft sold fewer than 1 million Surface tablets which means they didn't even break the top 5.
According to BGR, Microsoft ordered between 3 and 5 million Surface tablets for the holiday quarter, but sold around 750,000 at best. That's pathetic.
Is the metro UI just to big of a change for consumers? Does Microsoft just need more time? Maybe, but Microsoft has only been successful with one consumer product in its history. Aside from that one product, the XBOX, Microsoft hasn't done that well with consumer products. Whenever Microsoft tries to be Apple, they fail. Microsoft needs to be Microsoft and they should focus on enterprise. That's where they will succeed.
