AT&T buying T-Mobile means less competition and higher prices

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - March 20, 2011

AT&T said Sunday that it would purchase T-Mobile from Deutsche Telekom AG for $39 billion. The deal is expected to take about 12 months to close, and T-Mobile will remain an independent company until then.

So what does this mean for consumers? It means less competition. It's a good deal for AT&T because they will pass Verizon as the nation's largest carrier. However, it also means prices are likely to remain high, or go up because there will be less competition. It will be interesting to see if the US Government tries to block the deal because of antitrust issues.

The iPhone will not be going to T-Mobile customers, and AT&T customers will not be getting those fast T-Mobile speeds anytime soon. We'll have to kick back and wait about a year before anything really happens. Poor Sprint. They're the serious underdog now.
