The world was disappointed yesterday when Apple failed to unveil a new iPhone design. In fact, the press event was completely underwhelming. Apple has not found a suitable replacement for Steve Jobs just yet in terms of knowing how to excite the world about a new product. Is this an opportunity for Microsoft to leap ahead in the game? Some people certainly think so. Check out this post on Gizmodo and you might be convinced.
Apple will continue to lead the pack in the consumer market for awhile, but companies like Microsoft and RIM could have a small opening to convince people to come on over to their side of the table. After all, iOS 5 still seems far behind Android in terms of features, and the iPhone display seems small compared to most other smartphones on the market today.

Right now, Microsoft's awesome Metro user experience is the only real alternative to Apple's dominance. Not in market share—yet—but in terms of technological superiority. FAF, if you will, the Fucking-Awesome Factor. To me, Windows Phone 7.5 feels like the only real challenger to Apple's iOS 5 superiority.
