Windows Phone 7 is GSM only until 2011

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - September 17, 2010

It appears that Verizon isn't the only cell phone carrier to be left out of the initial Windows Phone 7 launch. Microsoft is focusing on GSM phones so there will be no CDMA Windows Phone 7 devices until 2011.

In an interview with CNET, Microsoft senior product manager Greg Sullivan said:

"For the worldwide market, the vast majority of phones are GSM phones, so we focused on GSM first and then plan to deliver an update that will have great CDMA support in the first half of 2011. That's device availability in the first half and we're very confident of that. That's probably a conservative estimate."

So it looks like Verizon is not the only carrier to be left out of the launch. Sprint and all other CDMA carriers will be left waiting too.
