Syware Announces Report CE 4.0

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - July 30, 2003

SYWARE, Inc., a leading developer of intuitive, mobile database tools for business and personal productivity, announced Report CE® 4.0, a major release of the world's only report writing tool for Pocket PC handhelds. Report CE 4.0 runs on Pocket PC and Windows CE devices, including those that support the new Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 software, and works with a variety of popular database tools, including SYWARE Visual CE®, Microsoft Pocket Access, and SQL Server CE. The latest edition of Report CE provides additional power and flexibility for a wide variety of small and large enterprise applications. New features include support for over 20 bar code formats; display and printing of images, including embedded pictures; output to Rich Text Format (RTF); and an expanded set of dynamic filters and command line switches that provide more robust control for eMbedded C++ and eMbedded Visual Basic developers.

Ideal for inventory management applications, Report CE 4.0 now supports the printing of over 20 numeric and alphanumeric bar code formats, including Code 39, UPC A, Code 128, PostNet, and UK Royal Mail. This provides businesses with a unique environment that combines the power of a handheld knowledgebase and the flexibility of a portable printer. For instance, new products can be entered into a mobile inventory database right on the loading dock and bar codes can be generated as they are received. In the field, products can be inspected at remote locations, then labeled with a bar code that contains current compliance information.

With Report CE 4.0, reports can also display and print pictures that are associated with a record. This means companies can provide a wealth of information in their portable reports. For instance, an invoice can contain images of each product or a real estate report can include pictures of the home and diagrams of property boundaries.

Reports generated by Report CE can be saved or e-mailed as Rich Text Format (RTF) or text. This enables users to share professional reports in exactly the format desired or import the information to other applications. For example, receipts can now be e-mailed to customers that provide a more complete corporate look-and-feel, including logos and lines for easier reading.

The new version of Report CE also includes functions to extract longitude, latitude, and altitude from previously captured GPS data. This allows reports to contain exact geographic information, such as the location of particular plant species when planning crop rotations.

Flexible Reports, Robust Control
New features have been added to Report CE 4.0 to control what data gets reported at report generation time. Filters can be based on constants or embedded Visual CE variables. This allows filter values, such as a date or a name, to be specified dynamically at the time the report is run. Filters can also be applied to sub-tables to allow finer control of what data is reported, such as only listing orders for more than five units of an item.

In addition, Report CE provides developers with more robust control. An expanded set of command line switches can be applied when launching a report from eMbedded Visual Basic or eMbedded C++. This allows users to skip such features as "print preview" and jump right to the print function. Users can also jump directly into a report by presetting variables and skipping filter dialog boxes.

Report CE works with any Windows CE 2.0 or higher device, including the Pocket PC and Windows Mobile 2003. Reports can be designed on a desktop PC or on the handheld device. Printing is done via the infrared port of the device, Bluetooth, serial port, network printer, or from the desktop.

Report CE operates in conjunction with Visual CE®, SYWARE's award-winning database and forms builder software for Pocket PC and Windows CE devices. Data can also come from applications developed with Microsoft Pocket Access, eMbedded Visual Basic, and eMbedded Visual C++. Reports are based on tables created using Visual CE, Pocket Access, or, using SYWARE's sqlceEnable™, SQL Server CE. For wireless access to server-based data, Report CE also works with any desktop ODBC-enabled table using SYWARE's mEnable®.
