Developer's Work Around Smartphone Digital Signing

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - January 20, 2003

One of the biggest complaints that users and developers for working with Orange and their Windows Powered Smartphone is the digital signing requirement. This requirement prevents any software which has not passed a $600 signing process from being installed on the smartphone.

Recently, developers have discovered bugs in the OS which have allowed them to circumvent this protection. Many have applauded the release of the information which will allow any application to be installed onto a smartphone.

When the hack was posted there was concern among users that the 'hack ' would allow people to install applications on other peoples devices. The worry was that certain individuals would use the hack for their own nefarious means.

In reality this is not the case. The digital signing must be disabled by the individual user. It is not possible to remove the protection on an SPV to which you do not have physical access.

While this is definitely a boost for developers it does raise some serious issues. What do you feel about the circumvention of built-in protection?
