New XScale Pocket PC On The Way

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - September 18, 2002

A California computer company, Zayo USA, has announced plans to release a Pocket PC in the middle of October. The Zayo A600PPC will feature a 400 MHz XScale processor and be one of the thinnest Pocket PCs on the market with dimensions of only 4.9" L x 2.9"W x 0.5"D.

Editors Take On the surface the Zayo A600PPC looks like a fairly decent device. The problem for a smaller company like Zayo is that they'll be fighting for market share against the big boys who have name recognition.

If the Zayo PPC had hit the market a few months earlier when XScale Pocket PCs were scarce it might have been able to secure its niche by securing sales from people eager to get their hands on an XScale powered device.

Today, however, the XScale processor is quickly becomming the standard upon which PDAs are judged. The Zayo device simply doesn't make itself stand out. Zayo is releasing the device with a suggested retail price of $550. This is a bit lower than some fo the other XScale devices out there, but I don't think that this factor alone would get people to switch to Zayo.
