I have received word that Microsoft will stop shipping Outlook 2002 with new Pocket PC handhelds. Microsoft has decided to ship Outlook 2000 in its place. Microsoft believes that the switch will not degrade the user experience when synchronizing a Pocket PC with a desktop computer. Microsoft would also like to stress that although a newer version of Outlook exists support for Outlook 2000 will continue for at least a couple more years.
According to a Microsoft spokesperson I was told that the reason for the switch is that Microsoft is seeking to provide the user with a rich synchronization experience through ActiveSync, but they do not want to comprimise the value of purchasing Office XP. Outlook 2002 was delivered with new Pocket PCs as part of a limited time promotional period. At the conclusion of the promotional period (Sept. 30, 2002) the decision was made to make the switch to Outlook 2000.
